THE USE OF CODE SWITCHING BY THE CHARACTERS IN LAYANGAN PUTUS DRAMA

This research is aimed at finding out the types and the functions of Code
Switching used by the characters in Layangan Putus Drama. This research uses
the qualitative descriptive method to analyze and determine the utterance of the
drama to include in the types and the function. The result of this research indicates
that there are 78 utterance data of code-switching used by the characters. For the

types of code-switching in this study found 52 data categorized into Inter-
Sentential Code-switching, 21data categorized into Emblematic Code-Switching,

5 data categorized into Establishing Continuity with The Previous Speaker. The
types of code- switching dominantly used is Inter-sentential code-switching. The
functions of code-switching found, 0 data categorized into Referential Function, 1
data categorized into Directive Function, 17 data categorized into Expressive
Function, 19 data categorized into Phatic Function, 41 data categorized into
Metalinguistic Function and there is not found the used of Poetic Function in this
research. The functions of code-switching in this research dominantly used
metalinguistic function.
