The Representation of LGBT in Born This Way Video Clip By Lady Gaga : A Semiotic Analysis

This study focuses on the representation of LGBT in Born This Way video clip by Lady Gaga. The objectives of this study are: 1) to explore the forms of signs expressed in Born This Way video clip by Lady Gaga to signify LGBT and 2) to describe the meaning of signs expressed in Born This Way video clip by Lady Gaga to signify LGBT. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were analyzed based on Pierce's semiotic theory. The data of this study were collected from the scene in Born This Way video clip by Lady Gaga which represent LGBT. The findings reveal that twelve datum were found in the scene of the video clip including LGBT signs, which showed that there are nine icons represent LGBT, which are form of Triangle, a unicorn, the Earth Goddess, the butterfly, tight skirt, sexy clothes, women hug each other passionately (lesbian), rainbow, and Lady Gaga, and seven symbols of LGBT was represented in the video clip, which are upside down pink triangle, upside down black triangle, unicorn, labrys, bisexual flag, butterfly, rainbow flag, and fourth indexes, which are includes collection of light forming the womb (in data 3), different races or communities and ostracism (in the data 9), recruitment in certain beliefs (showed in the data 10), and from the data II, which showed differences and unification in a new place. The result of this study reveals the meaning of these signs interpreted using Pierce's semiotic theory and the relationship between the Object, Representamen, and Interpretant
