THE STRUGGLE OF WOMAN REFLECTED IN CIGARETTE GIRL BY RATIH KUMALA
This research discussed about The Struggle of Woman Reflected in
Cigarette Girl Novel by Ratih Kumala which aimed to find out the kinds of
women way for achieving their existence in the novel Cigarette Girl. This
research focused on the struggle of woman in Cigarette Girl to refuse their liyan
in society in cigarette girl novel by Ratih Kumala using existentialist feminism
Simone de Beauvoir theory. Then, the data were analyzed using descriptive
qualitative method to identify, describe, and analyze the data that found by the
researcher in the novel Cigarette Girl. This research used note taking as the
instrument to find out the valid data. This research conducted to answer the
problems that concerning how the women tried to refuse their status as object in
society. The findings showed that there were four kinds of women struggle
according to Beauvoir as following: women can work, women can become
intellectuals, women can work to achieve a socialist transformation of society, and
to transcend its boundaries. The researcher concluded that the women have self-
sufficiency and capability to manage and develop their life to achieve the social
status by working, being intellectuals, transcend their boundaries, and working to
achieve a socialist transformation. They have some capability to survive in their
live as men.
