Smith M.B (2007) on analyzing the forms of lexical ambiguity, and this study also use the incongruity theory by Ritchie (2009) to analyze the humor of the joke.
The result of this study shows that there are two forms of lexical ambiguity found on the website Reddit posts, they are homonymy and homophone. There are 17 homonymy jokes, and there are three homophone jokes. There are also two forms of ambiguity that are not found on this study and those are homograph and polysemy. The most dominant form of ambiguity that is used to make jokes on the website Reddit is homonymy while the least used form is homophone, because homonymy allows for versatile and creative wordplay, making it a popular choice for crafting hurmorous puns.
