?s Speaking Anxiety in the English and Literature Department at Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar
The purpose of the study was to find out the types of student anxiety and identify the factors that cause speaking anxiety experienced by students.The researcher used a combined method to find and explain data about student anxiety. This study involved 30 student's in the 6th semester of English Language and Literature Department at Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. In collecting data, the researcher used the FLCAS guestionnaire instrument from Horwitz (1986) and conducted interviews using the theory from Madrid (1995). The results of the guestionnaire, student's anxiety types were divided into three including communication apprehension with a percentage of 6696, test anxiety with a percentage of 63”6 and fear of negative evaluation with a percentage of 69”9. The results showed that the type of speaking anxiety that was often experienced by student's was fear of negative evaluation. Furthermore, based on the results of the interview, the researcher found two factors that cause student speaking anxiety, divided into internal factors and external factors. Internal factors consist of intellegence, fear of mistake, risk taking ability and external factors consist of social of the class, the lecturer behaviour and student's first language.
