Politeness Strategies Used in The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

This study examines the politeness strategies used in The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. Oualitative method is used by the researcher to analyze the data. The data were taken from the interview videos in The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon youtube channel. In analyzing the data, the researcher used theory from Brown and Levinson (1987). The results of this study showed that all of politeness stratgies based on Brown and Levinson (1987) are used by Jimmy Fallon in The Tonight Show. They are bald-on record, bald-off record, negative politeness strategy, and positive politeness strategy. The researcher also found that the guest of the show used positive politeness and bald-on record strategy to respond Jimmy's strategy. Positive politeness strategies used in responding to Jimmy Fallon's bald-on record strategies, positive politeness strategies, and bald-off record strategies while bald-on record used in responding to Jimmy Fallon's negative politeness sttrategies. Furthermore, the payoffs in each strategy and the sociological factors: social distance, age and relative power become the factors that influenced Jimmy and the guest stars in choosing the strategy.
