Student's Motivation In Developing Speaking Skill at English and Literature Department of Alauddin State Islamic University Makassar
Motivation is a crucial factor in the development of speaking skills for students, as it encourages them to pursue their goals. This research aimed to investigate the motivations that drive 15 fourth-semester students in the English and Literature department to develop their speaking skills and to understand how motivation affects students' abilities in developing speaking skills. Gardner and Lambert's theory on motivation was applied in this research. The data were collected through interviews and analyzed using a descriptive gualitative approach to identify various types of motivation. The findings revealed two primary types of motivation experienced by the students: integrative motivation, which stems from an appreciation for Western culture and a desire to speak fluently like a native, and instrumental motivation, influenced by parental choices, job opportunities, study reguirements, classroom environment, aspirations for studying abroad, and recognition of the importance of language skills. Additionally, the research identified three ways motivation can affect students' speaking abilities: by providing a sense of purpose, increasing effort, and enhancing focus. This research highlights the importance of motivation in students' speaking skills development and provides valuable insights into various motivational factors that influence language proficiency. It is worthwhile to educators and policymakers to design effective language learning strategies to enhance students' motivation in learning English.
