Mandarin Phonological Interference in English Pronunciation among the Chinese native speakers in Makassar

Nurmila Sari - Personal Name;

This study discusses interference. The author discusses first language interference in speaking English for native Chinese speakers living in Makassar for a certain period of time. This is one aspect of bilingualism that occurs when someone learns English. In this case Chinese interference into English. This was chosen because native Chinese speakers often make mistakes in speaking English. The purpose of this research is to find out how the phonology of Mandarin interferes with the English pronunciation of native Chinese speakers in Makassar city. This research is limited and only focuses on the phonological interference of native Chinese speakers when they speak English. The author uses a gualitative method. Data collection technigues used in this study were recording and interview technigues. The writer chooses several sentences that contain interference using Weinreich's theory and analyzes them. As a result of the research, the writer finds that interference occurs in phonological rules that are not well studied by native Chinese speakers in learning English. In addition, some English syllables are not found in Chinese syllables. Conseguently, when native Chinese speakers speak, they transfer some syilable elements from their language into the English system as well as add, subtract, and modify words in the target language. So, the writer concludes that interference occurs in linguistic aspects, such as: the habit of the first language to the target language, lack of knowledge of English phonology, the influence of the mother tongue and the environment. This shows that there are many errors due to language interference that affect bilingual speech. In other words, their sentences are interrupted by their first language, which is Mandarin and caused by native Chinese speakers who cannot speak English well.
