Humor Used by The Characters in Dumb and Dumber 2Movie

This study examines the types and functions of verbal humor sentences by characters in Dumb and Dumber 2 Movie. This study aims to find the types of humor that are used by the humor in the Dumb and Dumber 2 Movie and to explain the function of humor of characters in Dumb and Dumber 2 movie. This study uses a gualitative descriptive method by applying the two theories: Shade (1996) about the types of humor and Wijana's (2014) about the function of humor. As a result, the total sentences of verbal humor found were 41 data by their types followed by their function. Among them are types: sarcasm with 9 samples, farce with 8 samples, riddle type with 1 sample, satire with 1 sample, Wit with 4 samples, anecdote with 1 sample, and jokes with 19 samples. Meanwhile 41 samples of humor function were found: to be just a joke 21 sentences, to ridicule the interlocutor 17 sentences, to criticize the interlocutor 2 sentences. lastly, to learn knowledge 1 sentence. The novelty in this study is the function of humor, where researcher explain the function by the characters in Dumb and Dumber 2 Movie.
