Hlocutionary Act on Songs Lyric of Coldplay Ghost Stories (2014)

This study aims to discuss the types and the functions of illocutionary act through the lyric of the song's meaning. The object of this study was Coldplay's Ghost Stories album especially in the song True Love, Magic, A Sky Full of Stars, and Ink. This study was a pragmatic approach by using illocutionary speech acts theory (Searle, 1979) and function of illocutionary act theory (Leech, 1983). The type of this study was a descriptive gualitative method by using a note-taking sheet instruments to identify, categorize, and analyse the data in the data collection. The study results showed that there were several types of illocutionary act that are found in the lyrics namely: representative, directive, commissive, and expressive. In addition, the function of illocutionary act was found in several songs namely: competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive.
