Factors Influencing Students” Difficulties in the TOEFL Reading Test (A case study at the English and Literature Departement
This study discussed about the difficulties faced by the fifth-semester student academic year 2022/2023 of the English and Literature Department of Adab and Humanities Faculty of Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. The purposes of this study are (1)to find out the most difficult aspect in Toefl reading test faced by the fifth-semester student of the English and Literature Department and (2) to identify the factors influencing students” difficulties in reading comprehension. The method applied was a mixed method. Ouantitative, was used for analysis of the Toefl test score and the index of difficulty. Oualitative was used for analyzing the responses from the interview. The instrument used was the Toefl Reading Test which consists of 50 guestions and the interview guideline. The result of the test showed that all of the students in fifth semester of the English and Literature Department faced difficulties in five aspects such as answering the main idea(84Y6), directly responding to guestions (749 0), indirectly answering guestions (72” 0), vocabulary guestion (71”0), and the reviewing guestion (7490). However, the most difficult aspect faced by the students of the fifth semester in English and Literature Department was finding the main idea guestion, because the located main idea was difficult to find. In addition, based on students” responses in the interview, the students mostly got difficulties in a long sentence, lack of vocabularies, time constraints, lack of knowledge of strategies in reading comprehension, and lack of practice besides support and prayer from the parent was very important, and the influence of department environment such as study together and doing conversation in English can influence students to get the good score in the TOEFL.
