Challenges and Solutions in Developing Basic Competencies of English Language and Literature Students at UIN Alauddin Makassar
The objectives of this research are to identify and assess the basic competency profile in English Language and Literature among English literature students and to address the challenges encountered by students in developing these competencies. This research focuses on the basic competencies of students majoring in English Language and Literature based on the basic competence theory by Spiro (1991), Gradman, and Hanania (1991). The methodology employed in this research includes exploratory data analysis and guantitative analysis. The findings of the data analysis reveal several key points. Firstly, there is a diversity of proficiency levels among students regarding basic competencies, with the majority at the intermediate level. Secondly, challenges arise from various factors, including limited exposure to English outside the classroom, difficulty in comprehending cultural contexts, and a lack of confidence in public speaking. Proposed solutions include the integration of interactive learning methods, the provision of additional speaking classes, and fostering cultural sensitivity through various activities. After conducting the research, the researcher concluded that several actions are needed to further develop the basic competencies of ELL students, such as applying a variety of learning methods, integrating cultural awareness components into the curriculum, conducting Structured research practice training, fostering a collaborative learning environment, expanding language support services for students, utilizing technology-enhanced learning approaches, and improving pedagogical skills.
