An Analysis of Deixis In the Movie “Wednesday” by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (2022)
Deixis can be defined as a part of pragmatics that studies words whose referents differ depending on the context. Deixis can be found in spoken or written language such as dialogue in films. This research aims to see how Alfred Gough and Miles Millar involve types of deixis in films using the theory put forward by Levinson (1983). Data analysis strategies that use descriptive language are known as gualitative methods. In order to gather correct data, researcher used documentation technigues that involved watching and reading screenplays from movies. In this study, the first episode of the movie Wednesday has person deixis which has 275 words, place deixis with 67 data, time deixis with 36 data, social deixis with 74 data, and discourse deixis with 95 data. After watching the first episode of the movie on Wednesday, researchers discovered that person deixis was the most prevalent deixis detected in the movie, accounting for 275 of the 547 total deixis data. This research can provide a suitable reference for future researchers who also want to conduct indepth research on deixis. The researcher suggests to future researchers to find out the types of deixis in other objects and use the same theory from Levinson (1983) or other theories related to deixis.
