First Language Interference Towards Speaking nglish At Eight Semester Students (2022-2023) In The nglish And Literature Department
The purpose of this research is to examine the first language interference
especially the types of grammatical interference with speaking English of eighth-
semester students (2022-2023) of the English and Literature department. The
researcher applied a qualitative method and used recording and interview test
techniques to collect the data. This research used Weinreich theory to identify the
types of grammatical interference. The participants are 5 students who speaks
Indonesia as their first language and study English until they get into eight
semester. The results indicate that students face difficulties with syntactical (word
order, prepositions, extra word and omission) and morphological elements
(subject-verb agreement, infinitive forms, adjective forms) of English grammar
because of their first language's influence. The study investigates the factors that
contribute to this phenomena, such as the human brain's inclination to recognize
familiar patterns, misleading similarities across languages, limited exposure to
proper English use, and innate grammatical difficulties. The results emphasize the
