Slang Words Used By Sportscasters In Europe
This study investigates the types and functions of slang words used by the sportscasters
in Europe. Drawing data from Official YouTube Channels, a descriptive-qualitative
analysis was conducted following Allan and Burridge's (2006) theoretical framework on
slang types and functions. There were 4 main types of slang words fresh and creative,
flippant, imitative, and clipping were identified in the sportscasters in Europe, and there
were 5 functions of slang words including addressing, showing intimacy, expressing
impression, and humiliating. Notably, addressing emerged as the predominant function.
This research provides valuable insights into the linguistic practices within European
sports commentary, contributing to a deeper understanding of the role of slang in this
context.
