English Swearwords Used By Indonesians On Social Media Instagram

This study aims to analyse the types and functions of English swear words used by Indonesians on Instagram social media. By using Pinker's theory, the purpose of this study is to categorise the swear words found on Instagram social media that are specifically used by Indonesians. Then the researcher also aims to find out the function of the swear words by using Searle's theory. The results of
this study found 30 data related to swear words on accounts on Instagram. 2 dysphemism, 3 idiomatically, 4 abusivelly, 5 emphatically, and 3 cathartically as
well as 6 assertive, 1 directive, 7 expressive, and 3 declaration. Therefore, the researcher concludes that many Indonesians on Instagram use swear words abusively and emphatically to channel emotions, boast, express attitudes, and
criticise. But besides that, not a few of them swear just for fun as from the
research results on the dysphemism type. The researcher found some facts that
swear words are used not only to create disputes and lead opinions on an issue.
However, swear words are also sometimes used as a joke in an informal setting. In
addition, swear words should also be used according to the context and topic of
conversation.
