An Analysis of Illocutionary Act in By The Main Character in The Movie The Lord of The Rings, The
The direct and indirect illocution performed by character and significant
type of illocutionary act used in The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers are the
focus of this research. The objective research of this study are describing direct and
indirect illocution and its type of illocutionary acts. Descriptive qualitative method
is used in this study. The data is analyzed by using speech act theory of John Searle,
an American philosopher of language. The result shows that character performed
illocutionary acts in several ways based on reasons such as the choice of words
according to the situation in the scene. The characters consistently express the direct
illocution and the indirect illocution in illocutionary acts. The parts of both are
representative/assertive, directive, expressive, declaration and commissive.
