The Analysis of Incongruity in The Humor of Red Notice (2021) Movie Script

Humor involving elements of strangeness in the Red Notice film script
(2021) is the focus of the research. The objective research of this study is to
describe the way of humor delivered through incongruity. Descriptive qualitative
method was used in this study. The data was analyzed by using incongruity theory
in humor of I.J Strauss and Pragmatic theory of George Yule. The result shows
the humor happens when both of speaker and listener understanding each other.
The sentences before reaching the punch line which is called the set-up, plays an
important role in bringing out incongruity humor. The punch line that has been
expressed in the form of a sentence then creates a new situation. New situations
that originate from the accumulation of set ups to punch lines will give rise to
alternative resolutions that illustrate the role of harmonization between situations
and dialogue in forming incongruity humor. This humor mentioned as incongruity
because of something that violates someone's way of thinking. Humor that is often
consumed in everyday life is a simple joke, but in a literary work such as movie
script that adheres to the humorous genre, incongruity humor is the right choice
by knowing the meaning because it invites the audience to also think while
enjoying the literary work presented.
