This research examines euphemism in Knives Out(2019) movie written
and directed by Rian Johnson. The movie was chosen due to its intricate plot
and its use of language to convey subtle meanings, hide the truth or divert
attention, aligning with the theory of euphemism. This research aims to
identify the types and functions of euphemisms present in the characters'
dialogues. Euphemism involves using subtle words or phrases to replace
expressions considered rude, offensive, or taboo, to avoid discomfort and
maintain politeness in communication. Drawing on the theories of Allan &
Burridge (1991) on types of euphemisms and Burridge (2012) on functions of
euphemisms, the researcher employed a qualitative descriptive method to
analyze the data from the dialogues in the movie script. The research findings
reveal that the characters in the movie utilize a wide and varied range of
euphemistic expressions. These expressions span nearly every type of
euphemisms proposed by Allan & Burridge. Moreover, the researcher
identified all the varied functions of euphemisms in the movie outlined in
Burridge's theory.
