Comparative Study of Sarcasm in American and Indonesian Stand-Up Comedy
This research studied about sarcasm that found in stand-up comedy. In
stand-up comedy the speaker or also known as Comic had their own way to bring
their material and one of the popular way is using sarcasm. Pandji Pragiwaksono
an Indonesian comic once said on his book that "it is very unlikely that a
comedian does not offend people". Stand-up comedy becomes an arena where
every material contains sarcasm in it. There are two participant on this research
they are Indra Jegel as Indonesian comic and Kevin Hart as American comic.
Using theory from Elisabeth camp with qualitative method to observe the result,
the researcher compared sarcasm of those two comic on their stand-up. The
results of this study is Kevin Hart had all the kind of sarcasm while sarcasm
prefix-like does not exist in Indra Jegel stand-up comedy. Like prefix sarcasm
doesn‘t exist In Indra Jegel because in Indonesia it‘s hard to make a joke with this
kind of sarcasm, remembering Indra Jegel used self deprecating tehnique is where
you poke fun at yourself. The most used sarcasm is propositional sarcasm, but
they had a different on the way they delevered it. Nina Setyaningsih‘s study which
finds that jokes delivered by comedians are influenced by their ethnic background
(Setyaningsih, 2013.). Each comic influenced bye their ethnic background, Kevin
Hart as american tend to be direct while Indra Jegel as Indonesian always try to
use a word that hearable in order to deliver the sarcasm.
