Discourse Markers Used in Jakarta Post Online Newspaper Related to Criminal Cases

This research is aimed to find out the types of discourse markers used in
criminal cases in the Jakarta post Online Newspaper and to analyze the functions
of discourse markers used in criminal cases in the Jakarta post Online Newspaper.
This research is based on two theories: Fraser‘s theory (1996) is discussed about
types of discourse markers and Schiffrin‘s theory (1987) is explained about
function of discourse markers. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method
to analyze the data. The researcher uses a note taking instrument to obtain data
from four criminal news in Jakarta Post online newspaper. The findings show 60
markers of types of discourse markers classified into contrastive marker,
elaborative marker, and inferential marker but topic change marker is not found
because its markers is not used in the criminal news in Jakarta Post online
Newspaper. Meanwhile, functions of discourse markers also show 60 markers that
is classified into discourse of connectives and marker of temporal adverb.
However, marker of information management, marker of response, marker of
cause and effect, and marker of information and participation are not found
because their markers are not used in the criminal news in Jakarta Post online
Newspaper.
