Plot Analysis of Graphic Novel Big Nate: Blasts Off by Lincoln Peirce as Children's Literature
This research focuses on analyzing plot elements in the graphic novel Big
Nate: Blast Off as Children’s Literature. The research objective of this thesis
is to find out the plot elements in Big Nate: Blasts Off. This research uses
qualitative methods, especially descriptive qualitative. In the data collection,
the researcher uses Big Nate: Blasts Off book and supporting scientific
references. The researcher uses note-taking as the instrument and then
analyzes the object into the structuralism approach with the theory of
Lukens about plots in children’s literature by classifying the types of
narrative order, types of conflict, pattern of action, complications (suspense,
cliff-hanger, foreshadowing, the climax, denouement, and inevitability), and
types of plot which indicates that the plot in the story is suitable for young
readers. The results of this research show that Big Nate: Blasts Off, possesses
all the plot elements explained by Lukens, it is in chronological order as
narrative order, person against person and society as conflict type, peak and
downward slide as action pattern, progressive plot as plot type, and contain
all of complications. From all the plot elements above, it can be proof that the
graphic novel Big Nate: Blasts Off by Lincoln Peirce can be classified as
children’s literature plotwise.
