Sexual Orientation of the Main Character in Casey Mcquiston’s “Red, White and Royal Blue” (2022)
This research discusses the changes in sexual orientation of the main
character in the novel Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. This
study aims to find and explain the changes in sexual orientation that occur by
the main character and the main character environment react to the
character’s sexual orientation change. Vivienne Cass and Judith Butler theory
is used to describe and analyze data in the form of narration and dialogue of
characters in the novel. This study uses a qualitative research method whose
instrument is note taking to collect data. As the results, the researcher found
that the main character experienced a change in sexual orientation from a
normal person (heterosexual) to a gay person (homosexual). The main
character experienced all stages of sexual identity development from Cass,
including identity confusions, comparisons, acceptances, tolerances, prides
and syntheses. The researcher also found that in relation to Judith Butler's
Queer theory, is that the environmental (family and society) backlash against
the main character's change in sexual orientation reflects the influence of
heteronormative societal norms and expectations. These reactions
demonstrate how individuals and social institutions enforce conformity to
heterosexuality and perpetuate harmful stereotypes about LGBTQ+
individuals.
