Maternal Colonialism in The Novel My Place by Sally Morgan 1987
Maternal colonialism is the involvement of the white women in the
indigenous aboriginal removal act in Australia in the 19th century. This
research focuses on the topic of the white women’s role in colonization that is
depicted in the novel My Place by Sally Morgan. The researcher uses the
narrative methodology to present the data in the novel My Place. This research
uses Margaret D. Jacobs's theory of maternal colonialism to analyse the data.
The researcher used the theory of characterisation by Guerin to analyse the
white woman characterisation in the novel My Place. The findings present,
based on personality and sociological aspect of the characterisation, white
women characters play a major role in subjugating Indigenous people
especially the stolen generation. The researcher concludes that the white
women show ambivalence as the person who became the “mother” of the kids.
