Phonological Interference on English Pronunciation Produced By Makassarese Students At English and Literature Department
The primary goal of this study is to discuss phonological interference
in Makassarese students studying English Language and Literature at UIN
Alauddin Makassar. It focuses on how these students pronounce English
fricative consonants, particularly the challenges they face with sounds like
/ð/, /θ/, /∫/, and /ʒ/, due to the limited presence of fricative consonants in
their native language. Using a descriptive qualitative method, and analyzing
their pronunciation based on Weinrich's theory. The study identifies three
types of competency errors: interference, intra-lingual, and developmental,
as per Richards' theory. Additionally, it highlights four factors contributing to
phonological interference: bilingual background, lack of commitment to the
target language, limited vocabulary, and issues related to prestige and style.
