Understanding Cognitive Metaphor Through TikTok Selected Videos
This study explores the use of metaphors in TikTok videos, specifically in the
context of relationship-related content featured in the “mascara” and “left the
restaurant” trends. The research aims to identify the types of metaphors commonly
employed in these TikTok videos and to understand how these metaphors are used
to express felings in relationships. The theoretical framework for this study is based
on Lakoff and Johnson’s metaphor theory. A descriptive qualitative method was
utilized to analyze the data. The findings reveal that the “mascara” and “left the
restaurant” trends effectively employ structural, orientational, and ontological
metaphors to convey complex, abstract concepts through relateable, concrete
experiences. These results align with Lakoff and Johnson’s theory, which posits
that metaphors are not merely linguistic devices but also reflect how individuals
comprehend and process abstract experiences in everyday life.
