The Correlation between Listening and Speaking Skill at the Second Semester Students Academic Year 2023/2024 in English and Literature Department Universitas Islam Negeri Alauddin Makassar
This research aimed to determine the extent to which listening skills
influence speaking skills at the 2nd Semester Students in the English and
Literature Department UIN Alauddin Makassar. The study used purposive
sampling to gather data from 27 students out of a total population of 116. A
mixed-method correlational research design was implemented, utilizing two
instruments: documentation of students' listening scores from daily practice
and their speaking scores from mid-term tests by lecturers. The researcher
used Pearson Product Moment with SPSS 20 to analyze the data. The result of
this research found that 0.452 with a significance level of 0.018 which is
less than 0.05. It means, there is a moderate significant correlation between
listening and speaking skills. Then, the alternative hypothesis is accepted and
the null hypothesis is rejected. In addition, the R-square value showed that
listening skills contributed only 20.5% to speaking skills, which is considered
low. In other words, listening is not the only factors that affect speaking
skills.
