Oppression in the USA as Portrayed in Angie Thomas’ “The Hate U Give” 2017
This study aims to analyze forms and impacts of oppression
experienced by black people. This study uses sociology approach in this the
novel The Hate U Give 2017 by Angie Thomas as a data source and is analyzed
using a qualitative descriptive method by note-taking as a research instrument.
This study was analyzed using the Five Face of Oppression theory by Iris
Marion Young (1990) theory about forms of oppression and researcher also
analyzed the data using the social impact theory by Bibb Latane (1981) which
states that the impact of oppression can be seen from 3 things including
strength, immediacy and the number of sources. The results of research show
that there are oppression experienced by black people including exploitation,
marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism and violence. The impact
of forms of oppression which include no access to a good education, no access
to proper work, police brutality and lack of legal protection. The forms of
oppression carried out by white people in the novel The Hate U Give have a
great impact on the lives of black people.
