The Development of Max’s Character in The Movie “Flora and Son” (2023)
Character development is the process character change that occurs as the
story progresses, this change can be observed through the nature. The
development of Max’s character is seen from Max’s nature which changes
from the beginning of the story depicted as a naughty child character who is
obedient and kind to his parents. This study aims to analyze the depiction of
Max character and the factors that cause the development of Max’s character. This research uses a structuralism approach with the data sources of the
movie “Flora and Son” (2023) and the movie script. Qualitative descriptive
method is applied to analyze the data, using characterization theory by Kenan
Rimmon (1983). The results of this study show that Max’s character is
portrayed indirect representation through action, speech, and environment. The factors that influence Max character development are caused by the
conflict that occur in the story. The conflict factors are internal conflict which
is Max inner conflict when he is obsessed with a woman. The second factor is
external conflict, when Max has a problem with the shop owner so that he is
imprisoned. The last factor is interaction character with another character, which is the closeness factor between Max and other characters focusing on
his family. This research provides new insights into children's character
change in a movie, emphasizing the importance of family relationship in the
character development process.
