The Sorcerer’s Gambit in Circe: Mapping the Plot of Magic Through Freytag’s Pyramid
This research analyzed the plot of magic in Madeline Miller's novel
Circe. The purpose of this research is to describe the plot of magic in the novel
Circe by Madeline Miller. The method in this research was a descriptive
qualitative method, the object and source of data in this research is the novel
Circe by Madeline Miller and the instrument of this research is note taking. The
data analysis technique in this research used Freytag's theory which discusses
the plot of magic in the novel by Madeline Miller entitled "Circe". The
researcher found the exposition begins with the introduction of the character
Circe until Circe becomes an adult. Circe wants to turn Glaucos into a god so
that they can stay together, but after becoming a god, Glaucos instead chooses
Scyla. Rising action begins with Circe's jealousy of Scylla, so she turns Scylla
into a monster and exiles her to an island. Climax at this stage Circe and Scylla
fight to finish what Circe has started. Falling action at this stage Scylla turns
into stone due to the poison from Trygon's staff, and Resolution where Circe
transforms herself into a full human being. The researcher concluded that the
plotting is an important element in a story. In this research, five parts of the
plotting can be found according to Gustav Freytag's theory.
