The Potrait of Marginal People in “Cenning Rara” (2020) Short Story
This research is entitled The Portrait of Marginalized people in the Short
Story “Cenning Rara” (2020) by Umar Thamrin. The aim of this study is to
analyze the cultural symbols and cultural practices depicted in the short story.
Cenning Rara tells the story of Caya, a teenage girl who faces social
discrimination due to her epilepsy and her family’s poverty. Under the guidance
of Bissu Saleh, a spiritual leader in Bugis culture, Caya learns the Cenning Rara
mantras as an effort to gain social acceptance and improve her family’s
economic condition. This study employs a qualitative method with a literary
anthropological approach. The primary data is derived from the short story
Cenning Rara, while supporting data is collected from various academic sources.
Using Clifford Geertz’s Thick Description concept, this research delves into the
cultural symbols and cltural practices embedded in the text. The findings reveal
that the short story Cenning Rara illustrates four main cultural symbols, such as
the Bodhi tree, and the Arajang chamber. Furthermore, the story highlights six
cultural practices, including the sacred Ma’giri dance and the spiritual
transformation rituals of becoming a Bissu. The results of this research are
expected to contribute to the development of literary anthropology studies,
particularly in the context of Bugis local culture.
