An Analysis Of Phatic Communion Employed By The Characters In The Movie “About Time”
This study analyzes the forms and functions of phatic communion in the film “About
Time” to explore its role in social interaction and character development. The results
showed four main forms of phatic communion: ritual words upon meeting (RW),
standard conversation topics (STC), supportive conversation (SC), and meaningless
or misunderstood words (MW). From the analyzed data, it was found that the most
dominant form is ritual words such as “hi” or “hello,” which are used to start a
conversation. In addition, the study identified six functions of phatic communion:
(A) starting conversations, (B) maintaining conversations, (C) breaking silences, (D)
expressing solidarity, (E) making small talk, and (F) showing respect. These
functions help build social relationships, create an intimate atmosphere, and support
the storyline through simple yet significant interactions. In the context of the movie,
phatic communion becomes an important tool to reflect relationships between
characters, both in interactions with those closest to them and with strangers, and
shows the influence of culture on communication patterns. This research confirms
that although phatic communion is often non-informative, it has an essential role in
building emotional closeness and maintaining continuity of communication.
