Factors of Disfluency in Speaking English by English and Literature Students at UIN Alauddin Makassar.
This research discussed the types and factors that cause of speech
disfluency by a student in exam room at English and Literature Department of
UIN Alauddin Makassar. The purpose of the research was to identify types of
speech disfluency using Fox-tree & McGregor theory and factors of speech
disfluency using Bortfeld et.al theory used by students in exam room. Descriptive
approach to analyze data to know the factors of speech disfluency and the types of
speech disfluency. The finding showed that there are five types of speech
disfluency occurring in the exam room they are silent pause, filled pause,
repetition, repair and lexical fillers. It is shown that the most dominant type of
speech disfluency used by the students in exam room is silent pause. The finding
showed that there are five factors of speech disfluency occurred in the exam room
they are processing load, coordination function, familiar vs unfamiliar
conversational partners and effects of these variables upon disfluencies. This
showed that the most dominant factors of speech disfluency were processing load.
Even though there are obstacles, they still try to be confident in giving their best
during the exam and always try to improve their English fluently.
