The Impact of the Great Depression to the main Character in the Novel The Four Winds (2021) By Kristin Hannah
The purpose of this research is to explain the impact of major
depression on the main character in the novel The Four Winds by Kristin
Hannah (2021). The depression is analyzed through triggering factors to know
what kind of impact it has on the main character, Elsa Martinelli. To analyze
the novel The Four Winds, this research uses a descriptive qualitative method
with a structuralist approach as outlined by renowned scholars Wellek and
Warren to detect the theme, character, plot, setting, point of view, and mandate
in the novel. After analyzing this novel, the author found that the impact of the
Great Depression experienced by the main character, Elsa Martinelli,
emphasizes how the economic and social changes due to the Great Depression
greatly affected Elsa's development, transforming her from a marginalized
woman to a tough figure determined to secure a future for her children. The
effects of the economic and social crisis, which led to poverty, hunger, and the
inability to make ends meet, the Great Depression affected not only the
economic and social aspects but also the emotional and psychological aspects
of the characters. The Great Depression not only worsens the economic
condition of Elsa's family but also affected her relationships with others. In the
midst of the struggle to survive, Elsa feels a sense of loss, isolation, and
loneliness. However, through her resilience and courage, the resolution of this
story has more happy sides than sad sides, because Elsa found inner peace and
a glimmer of hope for her and her children's future.
