Duality in Character of Captain Frank that Move the Plot of the Movie Jungle Cruise (2021)
The purpose of this study is to uncover the movement of the plot based on
the character attitude. This research uses Peter Brooks’ narrative theory,
focusing on the concept of plot, which has been believed to be the foundation
of the story. Brooks emphasized his theory on the movement of the plot,
which is driven by the pain and pleasure experienced by the character. The
plot story to be focused on in this research is the life of Captain Frank Wolff
as the protagonist of the story. Yet he is not like Cinderella, who has no own
dualities. He is depicted to have good dualities as well as bad dualities. He is
sometimes kind, but other times he is very cruel. Using Brooks’ information,
this research found that Captain Frank Wolff intended to decide his choice
based on 0irst to avoid the suffering or to case for pleasure. These two
intentions drive the movement of Captain Frank's lifestory in the 0ilm that is
received or interpreted as kindness or badness. This also explores the reason
for the existence of this intention. It is found that the source of human power
is based on duality, which is foundly known in eastern philosophy as yin and
yang.
