Politeness Principles in Comments on Donald Trump’s Post Instagram about Motivation for 2024 U.S. Presidential Election
Politeness principles refer to the rules or guidelines that govern how to
communicate with the aim of not hurting the interlocutor and respecting the
feelings of others. This study examines the principle of politeness used by
netizens in comments on Donald Trump’s post Instagram about motivation
for the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The purpose of this study is to identify
the types of fulfillment and violation of the principle of politeness using
Leech’s (2014) theory. In this research, the researcher applied a descriptive-
qualitative method because the data is collected in the form of words and
sentences. The results show that the fulfillment of politeness principles
includes 5 out of the 10 types of maxims of the principle of politeness. The
agreement maxim is the most dominant, followed by the approbation maxim,
sympathy maxim, tact maxim, and generosity maxim. There was no
fulfillment of the modesty maxim, opinion reticence maxim, feeling reticence
maxim, apology maxim, or forgiveness maxim. Simultaneously, this research
identified violations of the same principle of politeness, the researcher found
4 types of violations of the maxim of politeness, with the tact maxim violation
being the most dominant, followed by violations of the approbation maxim,
agreement maxim, and modesty maxim.
