Male Language Characteristics in The Film “The GoodNurse”
This research is aimed at identifying characteristics of male and
female language by using the characteristics of male language in a film as
well as the use of language functions. This research uses Coates’ theory
about characteristics of male language (2013) and language functions by
Jacobson (1960). The research design in this research used a descriptive-
qualitative method. The data source for this research was obtained from
the dialogue between male and female main characters in the film entitled
The Good Nurse. The results of the research show that male only used
three of the six types of male language characteristics as stated by Coates,
namely minimal response, command and directive, swearing and taboo
language, while male language characteristics are used by the main female
characters in this film, namely minimal response, commands and
directives, swearing and taboo language and compliments. Therefore, the
researcher also found two functions of language in the statements of male
and female characters. The function of language used by male and female
characters is directive and expressive. Basically, male used the directive
function more often than female characters, and conversely, the expressive
function is used less by male characters than female characters.
