Changes in the Meaning of Islamic Words in English Texts: A Corpus-Based Approach

This study investigates the semantic changes in islamic terms used in
English texts, with focus on articles published in the Adabiyah Journal from 2022
to 2024. Using a qualitative Corpus-based approach, this research identifies
which islamic terms have undergone a change in meaning, the factors influencing
these changes, and how these meanings develop in different contexts. The results
show that 9 of the 20 analyzed terms experienced semantic narrowing, while 11
terms remained consistent with their original meanings. Factors such as the
context of the article and the author’s perspective play a significant role in these
meaning shifts. This study highlights the importance of understanding semantic
changes in islamic terms to enhance intercultural communication and avoid
misunderstandings.
