Slang Functions in Song Lyrics of NIKI and Taylor Swift: A Functional Analysis
Slang in song lyrics often reflects contemporary culture, emotional
expression, and the identity of both the artist and their audience. It serves
not only as a stylistic choice but also as a sociolinguistic tool to convey
intimacy, attitude, and modernity. This study aims to identify and analyze the
functions of slang in the lyrics of popular songs by NIKI and Taylor Swift,
using the theory of slang functions proposed by Mattiello (2008). The
research employs a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis to
examine the lyrics. The findings reveal a total of 27 slang expressions,
classified into six primary functions. The most dominant functions found are
group and subject-restriction (6 data), freshness and novelty (6 data), and
desire to impress and faddishness (6 data). Additionally, the study identifies
informality and debasement (5 data), secrecy and privacy (2 data), and
playfulness and humor (2 data). These results show that slang plays a
significant role in expressing identity, social closeness, and the dynamics of
pop culture. The use of slang enriches the meaning of the lyrics and
strengthens the emotional connection between the artists and the listeners.
