The Portrayal of Stockholm Syndrome in Abusive Relationship of the Male and Female Characters in the Movie “Berlin Syndrome” (2017)
Stockholm syndrome in the context of an intimate relationship is a complex
psychological response where a victim of abuse develops a bond or emotional
attachment to their abuser. This condition can occur in relationships where there is
a significant imbalance of power, and it typically involves elements of emotional,
physical, or psychological abuse. This research discusses the portrayal of stockholm
syndrome in abusive relationship of the male and female characters in the movie
“Berlin Syndrome”. It is aimed at finding the portrayal of stockholm syndrome in
the male and female characters and the affect of male and female characters to the
plot of the movie. It uses character theory from Edgar V. Robert and Wellek and
Werren’s theory of dimensional character. It shows the male and female characters
in the movie “Berlin Syndrome” reflect stockholm syndrome which usually occurs
in abusive relationship such as black mailing, intermittent explosive, hitting, sexual
harassment, poisoning, dragging and killing intent. Stockholm syndrome
experienced by a female character is when she experiences continuous violence but
shows sympathy, compassion and care. It is affected by the character dimensions,
namely in terms of the phisyc, physical and social dimensions of the characters. The
characters shape the plot in a way that their respective appeareance interests, the
male character's past trauma, and each character's social conflict.
