Racial Discrimination Against Black Minorities in Robert Coles’ Children book The Story of Ruby Bridges
The purpose of this study is to determine the depiction of racial
discrimination in Robert Coles' picture book entitled The Story of Ruby
Bridge. The objectives of this study are to describe the types of racism found
in The Story of Ruby Bridge and to reveal how Ruby dealt with racial
discrimination. The method used in this study is qualitative. In collecting data,
this study used notes as a tool to obtain data. The researcher used Fred L.
Pincus' theory of racism to analyze the types of racism and used a sociological
approach to literature to reveal how Ruby faced racial discrimination and its
historical context. The researcher found that there were two types of
discrimination. The first type is individual racism, which often occurs in the
form of prejudice, stereotypes, and verbal abuse, while the second type is
institutional racism, which is discrimination originating from the
government, teachers, and police. Ruby overcame discrimination through the
support of her parents and through prayer and patience towards those who
oppressed her. Therefore, it can be concluded that Ruby is an example of
resistance to discrimination with a persuasive attitude.
