Women’s Language Features by Selected Women Figures in Jimmy Fallon’s Talk Show
This research examines the features of women’s language used by Padma
Lakshmi and Cardi B in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, applying
Lakoff’s (1975) theory of women’s language features and Pearson et al.'s
(1985) for women’s language functions. It investigates: the types, the
dominance, and the functions of these features. This qualitative research
employs a descriptive method, with data collected from two selected
YouTube interview videos. The researcher serves as a primary instrument.
The analysis involves identifying, classifying, and interpreting the speakers’
utterances. The finding reveals nine out of ten types of women’s language
features, with the most dominant feature is lexical hedges or filler and the
absent feature is precise color terms. Furthermore, all five main functions of
women’s language features are identified, with express a feeling emerging as
the most frequently used function. Moreover, this research underscores the
distinct linguistic strategies employed by women based on intersectional
background and their implications for gendered communication in media.
