The use of Figure of Speech in Novel Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie (2017) in delivering Love and Togetherness
This This study examines the use of figures of speech in Kamila Shamsie’s novel
Home Fire (2017) in conveying the themes of love and togetherness. Using Laurence
Perrine’s theory of figures of speech and Michael Ryan’s Formalist approach, this
research focuses on four types of figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification,
and hyperbole. A qualitative method with close textual analysis is applied to selected
passages from the novel. The reaserch indicate that figure of speech plays a significant
role in expressing the characters’ emotional experiences and relationships. Metaphor
emerges as the most dominant figure of speech, followed by personification, simile,
and hyperbole. These devices effectively represent familial bonds, romantic
attachment, and emotional solidarity amid social conflict, identity struggles, and
political tension. This study concludes that figures of speech in Home Fire function not
only as stylistic elements but also as essential tools in reinforcing the themes of love
and togetherness, thereby enhancing the novel’s emotional depth and thematic
coherence.
