Ecranization from Novel into Movie “Death on The Nile” by Agatha Christie
This study aims to identify the types of changes in the adaptation
process of the novel Death on the Nile into a film. This study uses a
descriptive qualitative method by applying film adaptation theory that
focuses on reduction, addition, and modification. The main data sources are
Agatha Christie's 1937 novel Death on the Nile and its 2022 film adaptation.
Data was collected using the recording technique. The results of the study
show significant reductions, additions, and modifications in the adaptation
process, particularly in terms of characters, plot, and setting. The novel
features 28 characters, while the film only includes 15 characters. Similarly,
the novel's setting comprises 26 locations, whereas the film only depicts 13
locations. The temporal setting in the novel includes 5 temporal variations,
while the film uses 8. Both the novel and the film employ a mixed forward-
backward plot structure. In conclusion, the adaptation of Death on the Nile
demonstrates a process of reduction, addition, and modification that alters
narrative elements to align with cinematic requirements, audience
reception, and time constraints.
