Language Function in “Purple Hearts” Movie Script (2022)
This research raised the types of language functions present in the script of
Purple Hearts (2022). The research employs a descriptive qualitative method and
utilizes Roman Jakobson's theory of language functions. According to Roman
Jakobson's theory, there are six language functions: Referential Function, Directive
Function, Expressive Function, Phatic Function, Poetic Function, and Metalingual
Function. The results of this study indicate that the script of Purple Hearts (2022)
contains all six language functions, with the most dominant being the referential
function (30.3%), followed by the directive function (26.3%), the expressive
function (20.2%), the phatic function (17.2%), the poetic function (4.0%), and the
least dominant being the metalinguistic function (2%). The researcher concludes
that in the Purple Hearts (2022) script, the referential function is the most dominant
language function, with a percentage of 30.3%, as the movie’s script presents facts
and information regarding the main characters’ backgrounds, military conflicts, and
legal situations, particularly concerning the medical condition of diabetes
experienced by the character Cassie, the various military regulations and duties
undertaken by the character Luke, and the legal details of their contract marriage.
However, there is a lack of dialogues discussing word meanings, grammar, or
language corrections, making the metalinguistic function the least dominant.
