The development of second language grammatical knowledge : an interactionist approach
The development of second language grammar has been one of the major issues in the study of second language acquisition (SLA). Studies and research into the issue have been conducted to investigate how second language grammar is learned and acquired. Such studies so far indicate that second language grammar development is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon. Experts in the field bave studied the issue from different perspectives resulting in diverse accounts and insights. McCarthy (2001) suggests that different theories and approaches regarding second language acquisition in general and second language grammar development in particular come from different views of looking at the nature of language and how it is acquired. The emergence of the cognitive approach, the universal grammar approach, the interactionist approach, etc., with their supporting theories and models, for example, just indicates the complex nature of second language grammar development.
