Discourse markers in student's thesis background
This research focused on particular types of discourse markers (DMs). The objective of this research is to find out the types of discourse markers used in students” thesis background and analyzed the appropriateness of discourse markers used by the students in their thesis background by using Bruce Fraser's (1999) classifications on discourse markers. The methodology that used mm this research is gualitative method. The result of data analysis mn thus research 1s that the researcher found the types of discourse markers used in students” thesis background, which are: the first is contrastive markers such as whereas, otherwise, eventhough, in contrast, and yet. The second is elaborative markers such as besides, in other words, also, for example, furthermore, and and. The last Is inferential markers such as so, because, in this case, hence, therefore, then, and in this case. In addition, the researcher found there were 30 discourse markers that used in the students thesis background. The result of this research showed that only 21 of the discourse markers were used in appropriate way and 9 of them were used in inappropriate way.
