Phonological Interference of Buginese and Javanese Students in Senior High School Towards English Pronunciation (A Contrastive Study)
This research discussed the contrast between Buginese and Javanese phonological interference and the factors that occur the phonological interference on the Buginese and Javanese Students. The method that was used in this research was gualitative research. The researcher collected the data with 9 fricative consonants (f, v, 0, 0, s, z, f, 3, h) by reading test, recording and interview, then analyzed with the theory by Weinreich (1979). The object of this research are the Buginese and Javanese students of Senior High School 2 East Luwu. There are 20 students in total 10 students from Buginese, 10 students from Javanese and all of them are ECC (English Conversation Club) members that have joined 1-3 years. The data showed that the contrast between Buginese and Javanese phonological interference that the researcher found there are only two of three kinds of phonological interference by Crystal (2003). On Buginese students, the researcher only found one category of phonological interference that was sound replacements on consonant (f!, meanwhile on Javanese students found two categories of phonological interference, that were sound addition on sound fh! and sound replacement on sound (f$. On the other hand, there are five factors that caused phonological interference of Buginese and Javanese students that were found in this research, such as bilingualism background, disloyalty to target language, interference error, intra lingual error and developmental errors (lack of knowledge).
