Phatic Function in Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber's Movie “The Fault In Our Stars”
Every message conveyed using language usually contains a special function depending on the context and how the speakers interact. Language is usually in the form of commands, expressing ideas, and expressing feelings. This study explains the problems in The Fault In Our Stars movie related to the Phatic function used by the Characters. The aims of this research is to find out the types and roles of phatic function in The Fault In Ours Stars movie. What is the form of conversation between speakers and how to stars, maintain, and end a conversation. To analyze the problem statement, the researcher used John Laver's theory. This research used descriptive gualitative method to analyze the data. The data source for this research is the conversation in The Fault In Our Stars movie. The findings showed that types of phatic function in The Fault In Our Stars movie were neutral, the self-oriented, and the other-oriented, and roles of phatic function were opening phase, middle phase, and closing phase. The researcher concludes that the Fault In Our Stars movie contains all types and roles of phatic function.
