Characterization of Women in little Women by Louisa May Alcott : Actantial model Analysis
This study is aimed at analyzing how women are characterized in Little Women. In analyzing data, the researcher uses the theory of Actantial Model by Algirdan Julien Greimas (1966). This research uses descriptive gualitative method. The data collected regarding how the women characters are characterized in Little Women's novel based on actant function and three axis in A.J. Greimas's theory (1966). The researcher found that the women characters in Little Women are characterized as the axis of desire. The main women character im Little Women's novel are Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. First, Meg cannot reach the goals to bea rich person, so she submitted herself to be an object of desire. Second, Jo has the ability on her goal but not her personality. She still needs something or someone who makes her grow to live a life. Third, Beth is a calm and shy woman who wants to be a pianist. Because of her personality, she has not had the power to reach her goal, so she needs someone to help her. The last is Amy, who is the youngest girl that still needs a guide ta make her grow. They have represented the women who are always dependent on someone or something behind them.
